Hydration and Recovery: The Overlooked Foundation of Resilience

When people think about Chiropractic, Back Pain, Neck Pain or Headaches, they rarely think about water.
But hydration may be one of the simplest ways to support how your body moves, recovers and adapts.
And most people are mildly dehydrated without realising it.
Why Hydration Matters
Your muscles, fascia, spinal discs and brain all rely on water to function properly.
When you’re well hydrated:
Muscles contract and relax more efficiently
Connective tissue remains more elastic
Spinal discs maintain their shock-absorbing properties
Circulation supports nutrient delivery and recovery
When hydration drops, even slightly, you may notice:
Increased stiffness
Slower recovery after exercise
More frequent Headaches
Afternoon fatigue
Greater sensitivity in areas of Back Pain or Neck Pain
Hydration does not “fix” pain — but it helps create an internal environment where your body can adapt better.
And adaptability is what we care about.
How Much Should You Drink?
In clinic, I often suggest roughly 1 litre of water per 35kg of body weight as a practical starting point.
70kg → around 2 litres
105kg → around 3 litres
It’s not a strict medical formula, and needs vary depending on activity level, environment and health status. But it gives a useful framework.
Think consistency, not perfection.
Simple Ways to Improve Hydration
Drink a glass of water within 10 minutes of waking.
Spread intake across the day rather than drinking large amounts at once.
Increase fluids if training, sweating or drinking caffeine.
Consider electrolytes during heavy exercise (not sugary sports drinks).
Eat fruit and vegetables — they contribute meaningfully to hydration.
Often patients don’t realise how much better they can feel until they improve hydration consistently for two weeks.
Hydration and Chiropractic Care
At Aceso, Chiropractic care is about helping your body adapt to physical, chemical and emotional stress.
If your tissues are under-hydrated, recovery can feel slower and tension may accumulate more easily.
Water isn’t glamorous.
But it is foundational.
